Kim Yo Jong Elevated to Key Party Position
The promotion occurred Monday during the first plenary meeting of the ninth central committee of the ruling party, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency. Kim Yo Jong was also reinstated as an alternate member of the central committee’s political bureau after a five-year absence. While the specific department she will lead was not disclosed, she is expected to continue overseeing inter-Korean affairs.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry said it is closely monitoring whether Kim Yo Jong will take on a more prominent role in relations with Seoul or in shaping North Korea’s external strategy.
The plenary session, chaired by Kim Jong Un, also elected key leadership bodies, including the Political Bureau, Secretariat, and Central Military Commission, and began discussions on a new five-year policy plan. Kim Jong Un highlighted that the newly elected leadership faces a “heavy and sacred duty” to implement the goals set by the latest party congress, acknowledging that the coming five years may bring internal and external challenges, while emphasizing the need to maintain strategic initiatives, strengthen state power, and improve living standards.
